Divorce on the Rise Across 25 US Cities

In the United States each year, thousands of couples make the decision to end their marriage. And while the divorce rate has remained quite high in recent years – hovering around 50 percent – recent statistics indicate that could change, with divorce on the rise across many U.S. cities.

The study, released by Divorce.com, ranked the top 25 cities across the nation where the rate of divorce has increased the most since 1970. It is encouraging that none of the cities were in California.

The top five cities where the rate of divorce has changed the most are:

  1. Virginia Beach, VA
  2. Buffalo, NY
  3. Plano, TX
  4. Greensboro, NC
  5. Corpus Christi, TX

Leading the list, Virginia Beach has a divorce rate of roughly 10.75 percent, compared to 2.2 percent in 1970 – a whopping 386.4 percent change.

The study also revealed that the U.S. now ranks in 12th place worldwide for its high percentage of marriages ending in divorce (49 percent), trailing behind the United Kingdom (53 percent) and Moldova (52 percent).

Uncontested Divorce in California

When a couple makes the often difficult decision to end their marriage, there are a few legal paths they can follow. Fundamentally, divorce is classified in two ways – contested divorce and uncontested divorce. Uncontested divorce is best described as the mutual dissolution of marriage, which can prove beneficial for both spouses, as it allows the divorce to be processed without the stress of contentious legal battles or a lengthy trial.

Couples filing an uncontested divorce may experience a far simpler process than those in a contested divorce, but that does not mean that there is no need for legal representation. Even in uncontested cases, you still need someone looking out for your personal rights and interests. This is particularly true in cases involving:

  • Child Custody
  • Alimony
  • Child Support
  • Mediation
  • Property Division

If you or someone you love is entering into the divorce process, even if uncontested, it is best to contact a qualified divorce attorney. A lawyer specializing in this area of law can provide legal expertise and support throughout mediation and other negotiations, and can help ensure that you receive the full and fair settlement that you deserve.
