Guilty Plea For Man Owing Over $1 Million In Child Support
A New York man pleaded guilty on Thursday February 21st to owing $1.2 million dollars in overdue child support payments. It was reported that 50-year old Robert Sand had been evading his responsibilities to his three children for over ten years. Sand admitted to having relocated from New York to Florida before leaving the country after two arrest warrants were issued in his name in 2000 and 2002.
Sand was arrested in November of 2012 after attempting to enter the Philippines with a lack of proper identification. He was then extradited to California and taken into custody. During his ten year absence, Sand ran a business in Thailand. Those ten years of overdue child support fees accumulated to the now $1.2 million total.
The Department of Health and Human Services launched a website in January of 2012 making a list of “deadbeat parents”; parents who owe outstanding amounts of child support. Based on the large amount he owed, Sand ranked at the top spot on the site. He is scheduled to be sentenced on May 21st,, and faces up to four years in prison.
