Woman Loses Joint Custody Following Rant On Facebook
After using a profane term to describe her oldest child on Facebook, a New York woman has lost her joint custody privileges. The woman and her former spouse divorced in 2006, and the ex-husband was named as the primary caregiver. However, the husband requested that his former spouse lose custody altogether following her own request to modify visitation periods with their three children.
The court granted his request on the grounds of the wife’s refusal to participate in counseling for their oldest child, who suffers from mental health issues and was constantly picked up by the husband due to the wife’s inability to care for him. The court further stated that the mother admitted to both physically and verbally abusing the child out of frustration.
The woman’s rant on Facebook was found to be so poorly executed by the court that she has been barred from speaking of the matter on any social media sites. According to the New York Daily News, nearly one-third of all divorce-related matters filed in 2011 were in some way associated with the social media giant. Although statistics for 2012 have yet to be released, the numbers are expected to either remain the same or increase.
